Rest In Peace
November 23, 2006
Butterfly was the type of mare that one never forgets, once they meet her. She just had that
"presense" about her that seemed to draw people to her.  She had a very sweet
disposition, not a mean bone in her body.  She never bit, kicked, bucked, reared, or did any
other bad habit.

Butterfly was broke to ride, though I didn't ride her as much as I wish I had now.  She had
smooth gaits, and could be ridden bareback with a halter, or with nothing at all.  She has
passed this easy going disposition onto her foals.

In the 5 years I owned her, Butterfly gave me 4 beautiful foals, 2 of which I still own.  3 of
them are duns, and 1 is a bay.  I am very thankful I  have 2 beautiful "butterfly babies" to
raise up in her memory.

Butterfly had just recovered from a bad bout of strangles when she came down with
purpura hemorrhagica, which is "an immune-mediated condition where antibodies directed
against an organism combine with components of the organism leading to inflammation.
Signs of purpura hemorrhagica include swelling of the legs and muzzle, fever, laminitis, and
little red spots or bruising visible on the lips, gums, and nostrils of the affected animal.
These horses need to be treated by a veterinarian and this is considered a complication
with a potentially guarded prognosis."

We fought it hard for 2 weeks, but in the end she lost the battle.  She crossed the Rainbow
Bridge on November 23, 2006.  She will forever be missed.

Rest in peace, Butterfly.  You were a wonderful mare and I am blessed to have had you in
my life.  I know I will see you again someday, and we can catch up on all that ridin'.
